BarCamp on BBC

Submitted by vlado on Fri, 2005-10-28 08:40.barcamp | barcampamsterdam | beeb | flock

OK, I haven't lied too much. I just had the date wrong.

Yesterday night there was a feature on Newsnight about Barcamp and flock especially. It was a good laugh watching it. I was showing the creative chaos there. While not everything was 100% right, I suppose it was due to trying to munch the ideas down for the unsuspected victims, the TV viewer that is.

|Internet Part II: Return of the geeks? is a writeup by Paul Mason, a Barcamp bystander.

Barcamp Amsterdam on BBC

Submitted by vlado on Mon, 2005-10-24 13:37.barcamp | barcampamsterdam | geek culture

Somebody mentioned that there will be a story today on Newsnight about Barcamp. Apparently it is an accidental story, since the beeb didn't have enough budget to cover something else....

Mmm, do you believe it? The budget thing, not really. But the gossip is good. So tune your TV or browser to watch Barcamp snippets to BBC2 Newsnight, tonight - Monday 24, October.

When barcamp is over turn out the light

Submitted by vlado on Sat, 2005-10-22 21:32.barcamp | barcampamsterdam | geek culture

Barcamp, Amsterdam, over. It was an interesting time. A bunch of geeks coming from all over the plate got together to chat, discuss, brainstorm, share, fool around, hack, learn, teach, should I continue, no.

It was generally fulfilling. For me at least. First flock. I like this firefox based browser. The flock guys have the right ideas IMO. It is sleek, not really bigger than mom, has really nice tools like the blog editor, the shelf, the flickr topbar. You can sample del.icio.us on the fly. Mmm. Oh, yes, I'm writing this using flock. Waiting for the next developer preview. I wonder if we could do more to expose the various Drupal APIs so that they could be integrated into flock and firefox.

BarCampAmsterdam Update

Submitted by vlado on Thu, 2005-09-29 13:34.barcamp

from http://www.barcamp.org/index.cgi?BarCampAmsterdam

Immediately following EuroOSCON, sometime around Oct 20-22. You can also track this event using the Upcoming.org entry: http://upcoming.org/event/32391

And by following, we mean starting Oct. 20th at 16:00, right after Cory Doctorow's presentation, and going through Saturday. We hope that this will encourage more people to attend EuroOSCON, and that many attendees can stay for the hands-on hacking and community events at Barcamp Amsterdam

Good to keep up with the developments.

Discussions are brewing to turn part of the Drupal conference in Amsterdam into a wider event for open source projects. The motivation is the lack of any space for open source projects at the O'Reilly event. Details are shaping up here:

CodeJam

Submitted by vlado on Mon, 2005-09-19 18:37.barcamp | code poetry | codejam | ideas | memes

What if a bunch of geeks, not nessesarily coders, get together and jam on a topic, piece of code. Time? Depend on the topic - you wouldn't write the linux kernel in 15 minutes. You could compose a beautiful 5 line code poem in a few minutes though.

Something along the lines of OpenSpace, BarCamp, FooCamp, LUG meetups, tag tuesdays, fill your own.

BarCamp

I like the BarCampUK idea. The best thing about it (IMHO) is the (possible) dynamism of discussions. Check out the the wiki

Some (very very very) long time ago we - some friends of mine and yours truly, have toyed with the idea of organising scene-jams in BG, that is demo-scene meet-ups, not compos, just meet and jam. Unfortunately I have to put this on the long list of good ideas, which never happened.
