Libya sentence nurses and doctor to death by firing squad, again

Submitted by vlado on Thu, 2006-12-21 10:10.HIV | human rights | injustice | justice | lybia | sham | society | wrongs

Two days ago a Lybian court sentenced five nurses and a doctor to death, for the horrendous crime that they have apparently intentionally infected some 400+ children with HIV. The really outrageous and and sad side of this story is that the sentenced medics are innocent, at least according to the opinion of independent world renown experts. Their opinions have not been allowed in the court proceedings and discounted as biased, erroneous and alleged that they form a part of a conspiracy against Lybia. That is simply ridiculous. Especially since the medical opinion is that the main cause is probably bad hygiene practices in the hospital in Bengazi. :(

From a conspiracy theorist's point of view it is an inspiration that the blood money demanded by Lybia match the money Lybia was sentenced to pay the families of the Lockerbie bombing's victims.

There's nothing more to comment - there is loads of information on the internet. The article in wikipedia - HIV trial in Lybia provides a fairly brief but thorough account on the matter.

Justice

One morning in Indonesia there was some sort of signal, and millions of Moslems rushed out and butchered their Chinese neighbours. About half a million died.

Are the Libyans going to give a signal for something similar to happen in Europe?

The UN rewarded Indonesia with the gift of the newly independent Christian and Pagan nations of West Papua and East Timor. Papuans are still being genocuded and their resources thieved. It is doubtful that the UN will reward Europeans for butchering Moslems - they are already making huge profits from thieving West Pauan resources.

Call me braindead, but I don't understand what are you saying.

The issue on hand has nothing to do with what happened in Indonesia. It is a fact, that a large number of people, the press reports mostly children, but I think that's just the top of the iceberg, were infected with HIV in a hospital. The Lybian authorities prosecute and convict six medics for doing that on purpose, a conspiracy to kill. At the same time they make noises to tie in their freedom with the Lockerbie plane bomber's freedom and/or the money the Lybian government has to repay the victims of that bombing. Throw in that mess an unfair trial, where the accused were tortured to extract their confessions, scientific evidence dismissed, since the judges thought it is biased and part of the same conspiracy of the West against the people of the Jamahiriya. Where is the justice in that?

It is true, that Qaddafi and the ruling circles of Lybia will have a tough time in Bengazi (it has a history of strong opposition to the Colonel's regime) if no one gets punished for this tragedy. Politically for them it is very good to find foreigners, not so much westerners, europeans - just foreigners whom they can realtively safely try and punish. Classic scapegoats. Better, if the governments of countries from where the scapegoats come are weak and don't have big international influence. Well Bulgaria and Palestine fit the bill. Bulgaria has a history of giving in to pressure, the current (at least last 40 or so years) crop of politicians care more for their own prosperity and well being and worst of all are amateurs on the international stage. Palestine? Influence? Joke?

On the other hand Lybia is important as a strategic oil and gas reservoir of Europe and the world overall. Call me a skeptic, but the possibility of a strong international pressure on Lybia for a really fair trial is close to nil.

So... Conspiracy of the west? Bulgaria? Palestine? Someone must be smoking.

In reality the real reason for the infections and the human tragedy is most likely mismanagement, poor hygiene, lack of funding, maybe be even a consequence of corruption. Recently a manager in the same Bengazi hospital was arrested and charged for that crime.

Yep. There is a lot of injustice out there in the world. Not only in Lybia or the so called third world. It is everywhere. It is in Europe, America, Asia. All you can do is pick every case one at a time, make noise, if it is closer to you and you have the will, ability and opportunity act. Do it from your own moral standpoint. No more, no less.

In this particular case - the children and their families are most important. Money matter, that's true, but what matters most is treatment and making sure that this won't be repeated. And this is the worst side effect of this trial. It simply declares that all is good in the Lybian hospitals, the king has clothes, sleep well at night. The baddies will be executed at dawn.
